Almost all of us have experienced it – the uncomfortable, unwanted, and unexpected twitching of an eye. It’s hard to know where they come from or to know how long they’ll last. Cartoons and movies make it seem like eyes only twitch when we’re annoyed or frustrated, but there are plenty of other situations in which we can experience this phenomenon.
The most common culprits are stress and fatigue.
We all face stress and fatigue in some form throughout our lives. Our bodies can express these feelings in various ways from rashes to stomach aches to eye twitches.
Fatigue is also a common experience for many who work hard and may not get sufficient sleep. This directly impacts your eyes, since every waking moment throughout the day you’re viewing and processing information. For this reason, it’s normal for eyes to feel fatigued and begin to twitch.
There are a few other reasons you may experience eye twitching:
- Eye irritation
- Eye or eyelid strain
- Physical exertion
- Medicinal side effects
- Need for glasses
- Dry eyes
- Alcohol, tobacco, or caffeine
As you can tell, there is a wide variety of reasons this may occur. So where should you begin in trying to get rid of it?
Since stress is one of the most common culprits, take time out of your day to unwind, go for a walk, or have a peaceful moment to yourself. If you’re fatigued, make an effort to get enough rest and cut back on caffeine consumption. Eye drops will help if the cause of your eye twitching is dryness. Applying a warm compress to your eyes once the twitching starts can be quite soothing, and might tone down the severity.
In order to prevent future eye twitching, keep track of when it occurs, and see if there is a common cause. This way, you can purposefully avoid that trigger and additional episodes.
